About Us

Res Publica ran as a pilot project in Sierra Leone in 2001-2002. It was formally launched in December of 2003. It has three full-time fellows, supported by a broader network of “Friends of Res Publica” and a Global Advisory Board. It is based in New York.

Our fellows are:

Ricken Patel: Ricken is Canadian and has consulted for the International Crisis Group, the United Nations, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Gates Foundation, Harvard University, CARE International and the International Center for Transitional Justice, in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Afghanistan, Sudan and New York. He has a Master in Public Policy from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and a Bachelor’s degree from Balliol College, Oxford University. He graduated first in a class of 350 from Oxford, and led student governments and student activism at both universities.

Tom Perriello: Before co-founding Res Publica, Tom served as Special Advisor to the Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, a United Nations tribunal, and as a Yale Law School/OSI Teaching Fellow in West Africa. He has worked for the US State Department, the International Centre for Transitional Justice and others on human rights and legal reform efforts in Afghanistan, Sudan, Kosovo, Argentina, Chile, India, and the United States. Prior to law school, he worked as Assistant Director of the Center for a Sustainable Economy (now part of Redefining Progress) and as a consultant on youth and environemental campaigns. elections. Tom is also a founder of the Catholic Alliance for the Common Good. He holds a BA in Humanities from Yale College and a J.D. from Yale Law School and is a member of the New York State Bar.

Tom Pravda:  In addition to his work with Res Publica,Tom has since 2003 been a member of the UK Diplomatic Service, where he has worked on EU trade and development policy, as an advisor to the Special Representative for Climate Change and most recently served as the UK Representative in Goma, DRC. He has also consulted extensively on political, security, research and advocacy issues for a range of clients, including the US State Department, the UNDP, the International Center for Transitional Justice and Oxford Analytica. He holds an MA from Balliol College, Oxford, where he received several academic scholarships and awards.

Res Publica (US) Inc. is incorporated as a Non-Profit Organization in New York State. Res Publica LLC is also incorporated as a limited liability corporation in New York State.
