In January 2000, the Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar became General
Secretary of the National Council of Churches, a coalition of thirty-six
Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox member communions, with 140,000 local
congregations and approximately 50 million congregants. Edgar is an ordained
elder in the United Methodist Church and a former President of Claremont
Theological School (1990 – 2000). Previously
he served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from the Seventh District
of Pennsylvania, where he sat on the Select Committee on Assassinations (1976-78)
that investigated the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and President
John F. Kennedy. He has served as a pastor, teacher, college chaplain, community
organizer, and director of a "think tank" on national security
issues.
Dr. Edgar received the bachelor of arts degree from Lycoming College, Williamsport,
Pa., and the master of divinity degree from the Theological School of Drew University,
Madison, NJ . Edgar serves on the boards of the National Coalition on Health
Care, the National Religious Partnership for the Environment and the Environmental
and Energy Study Institute. His work has garnered awards from the American Legion,
Vietnam Veterans of America, and the National Taxpayers Union.
