Voters See Poverty and Hunger as the Real Moral Issues in the Presidential Race

Polling Shows Voter Interest Overwhelmingly for Poverty and Hunger Issues; Not Gay Marriage

WASHINGTON - In a national poll of likely voters conducted on July 14-15 2004 , an overwhelming majority of voters said that in deciding their vote for president, they would rather hear a candidate’s plan for fighting hunger and poverty (75 percent-including 61 per cent of Republicans responding) than a candidate’s position on gay marriage (17 percent). Other findings include:

  • 89 percent considered a candidate’s position on reducing hunger and poverty to be an important factor in deciding whom to vote for president;

  • 94 percent believe government anti-hunger programs are important
